Heritage Pigs

Our Pigs:

All our pigs are raised in a humane (human friendly), natural environment. After they have had colostrum from their mother, we hand raise our baby pigs on fresh goats milk from our dairy. This assures the survival of our baby pigs as MANY baby pigs are accidentally crushed by their mothers in their first week of life. They are handled by us even after weaning every day and are not afraid of people. We STRONGLY believe in providing the happiest life possible for all of our animals, and especially those who will give their lives so that we can eat. There is NO reason to treat animals in a way that makes them fearful of humans. They deserve that respect. They deserve a happy life, no matter how long that life may be.

They are provided with shelter as well as a fenced forage area located in shaded woodland. They are fed a meat free diet including, but not limited to, natural forage, whey (from artisan cheese making), vegetables, fruits, limited grain based products (rice, pasta, and whole grain breads, etc…) and provided with clean drinking water at all times. We do not use any chemicals, hormones, or any artificial growth stimulants in ANY of our animals.

Pricing:

A non-refundable $150.00 deposit is required on all pigs. This is applied to the total purchase price of the pig.

Purchase price of each pig is calculated after processing as follows:

$3.50 per pound calculated from hanging weight

(head, entrails, and feet removed before weighing)

This $3.50 per pound price, paid to Yvonne Robinson, pays for the housing, raising of the pig to the desired market size, and delivery of that animal to Capes Sausage Company. Market size of pig when delivered for processing determined by agreement between purchaser and Robinson Family Farm in advance.

Processing of our pigs is done by Capes Sausage Company. All processing fees due directly to Capes payable by purchaser of pig. Fees paid to Capes include the standard kill fee of $30.00 and  $0.45 per pound for cutting and wrapping. This includes custom cut and wrap to your specifications including MSG FREE hand made sausage.

If purchaser of pig wishes to acquire their pig live (not processed and packaged), pricing is calculated between Purchaser and Yvonne Robinson in advance of acquiring the pig including a delivery fee of the live pig.

Example of cost break down per pig:

Price of pig @ 185lbs hanging weight (paid to Yvonne Robinson) = $647.50

Kill fee (paid to Capes) = $30.00

Processing fee $0.45 lb (paid to Capes) = $83.25

Total estimated price of pig at 185lbs hanging weight = $760.75

The larger (older) the pig at processing (up to 12 months of age), the higher the overall cost (except the kill fee) but with maturity comes flavor development. Pigs grow their frame (bone structure) first, then they begin to fill out, building muscle and developing fat distribution throughout the meat. More fat distribution throughout the meat in a more mature animal translates to more flavorful, higher quality meat. This will not be the dry and flavorless pork you are used to, but an intensely clean pork flavored meat that will open your eyes to what pork is meant to be.

This may seem like a substantial amount of money at one time, but an average pig can provide for a family of four for a year. This is also the highest quality pork you can provide for your family.
